Franchise Opportunities That Work

If you’re thinking of taking the franchise option, make sure you do your research before committing yourself.

If you're one of the many people that are considering a franchise as a new way of working, you'll find that there's a huge choice out there. You might be looking for something that fits in with your previous experience, or want to try something completely new. Whatever you're after, take the time to make sure that the franchise you choose will work for you.

All About the Right Franchise

What works for someone else won't necessarily work for you, so whilst your friend or family member might be doing really well with a franchise that use the "evening party" format, or that involve going from house to house, those opportunities just might not appeal to you. That's why you need to approach your franchise completely objectively and independently. Finding the franchise that works for you is all about setting out what you want to achieve:

•    Income – how much money do you want to make? This will differ depending on whether you're the main income earner in your household or whether your franchise is bringing in a second wage. Work out how much you need to make from your business as well as how much you want to make. You have to be sure that your franchise is going to help you recover your investment and give you a reasonable, regular payout.

•    Hours – how much work do you want? Don't choose a franchise that involves long or unsociable hours if you're trying to reduce the amount of time you spend working. Whether you want a 9-5 option or you're happy to work at the weekends as well as during the week, make sure you find out what type of workload the franchise brings with it.

•    Flexibility – one of the big selling points of a lot of franchise schemes is the flexibility. That's why many people choose franchise businesses when they have school runs, care of a relative or difficult working hours of a spouse or partner to fit around. If flexibility is important to you, check with your franchise owner whether their opportunity would suit your needs.

•    Support – once you're comfortable with your franchise, you can do pretty much anything with it, but in the early days, you're going to need training and support. Getting off to the best start possible is essential for a successful franchise, so ask about support, training and ongoing mentoring when you investigate your franchise opportunity.
